Zambia, home of the pioneering ‘walking safari’ born from a love of the wild by naturalist Norman Carr, has historically offered quality over quantity with a handful of barefoot, rustic camps providing excellent service and attention to detail. In recent years more camps & lodges have sprung from the rich soils, offering a little more variety and improved infrastructure and regional flight schedules a better connection between the major wildlife regions. You can now ‘hop’ from Lusaka to South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Livingstone, Kafue or all of the above and experience a combination of some of Southern Africa’s wildest National Parks.
The huge, iconic Zambezi River dominates the landscape as it’s humble source starts as a mere trickle in the Northwest corner of the country, taking a brief foray into Angola, before wending its way, wider and wider to Dr Livingstone’s infamous Victoria Falls. From here, in a fury of white water the river narrows through steep gorges, before once more widening and flowing into the vast, man-made, Lake Kariba and onwards through Mozambique to the Indian Ocean.
